Alphonzo Moore was born on May 19, 1925, in Macon, Mississippi, to the union of John and Gillian Moore. He was a cherished father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. Surrounded by his family, he left us peacefully on January 26, 2025, at the age of 99. Alphonzo was the twelfth of fourteen children.
Coming into manhood, he decided to join the United States Navy and travel the world. After his time in the Navy, he began working as a parking lot attendant in downtown St. Louis, where he was a beloved and loyal employee. On May 25, 1949, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Vivian Shores, and to that union, three children were born: Valerie M. Harrell (Dottie), Dalvin C. Moore (D.C.), and Janet A. Moore.
In his free time, he liked to drive, visiting the places that held memories of his life’s journey. Whether it was the old neighborhoods or the landmarks, each spot had a story, and Alphonzo loved sharing these stories with his family. He also enjoyed going across the river to Illinois to play his “numbers.” He was a family man and a God-fearing man, loved and respected by all who knew him.
All his siblings, his wife Dorothy, and his eldest child, Melvin, daughter Valerie, and son Dalvin, preceded him in death. To cherish his memory, he leaves behind his baby girl and youngest child, Janet, and beloved grandchildren John, Samara, Ashley, and Brian, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren Christian, Chaya, Nuri, and Bricen, as well as a slew of nieces and nephews.
His life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and love for family. Rest in peace, Alphonzo. Your journey was long and fruitful, and your memory will live in our hearts forever.
